So, it has come to this...

HP LaserJet 600 Error Code 49.38.07

The 600 series LaserJets have a small SSD in the formatter cage. Unfortunately when the problem arose I wasn’t able to obtain the service manual to look up the exact meaning of the error code but I found re-formatting the SSD and re-installing the firmware to be the fix. Before beginning the process you will want to download the latest firmware for your 600 series printer at support.hp.com and place it on a flash drive.

  1. Power off the printer.
  2. Plug your flash drive containing the firmware into the front USB port.
  3. Power on the printer and press the Stop button when the Ready, Data and Attention LEDs illuminate solid.
  4. Press the Down button to highlight Administrator, and then press OK.
  5. Press the Down button to highlight Format, and then press OK.
  6. When the message Complete appears on the control panel display, press the Back button.
  7. Press the Down button to highlight Download, and then press OK.
  8. Press the Down button to highlight USB Thumbdrive, and then press OK.
  9. Press the Down button to highlight the xxxxxxx.bdl file, and then press OK.
  10. When the message Complete appears on the control panel display, press the Back button 3 times.
  11. When the message Continue appears on the control panel display, press OK.
  12. The printer will continue to boot to the Ready state.

If that doesn’t work run the built in diagnostics in the administrator menu to check the internal memory for problems.
